Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young child. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized it wasn't the ideal place for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time she already had made her television debut in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
